My home shack QTH lacks good antenna options. But also after a long and rather dark winter at home, it’s always nice to go out and work from nature or at least outside if weather permits again. Maybe not quite under the trees and next to nature (too cold still), but using the car as shack is a good first outdoor choice, definitely.

In order to work from my car (it’s a VW Passat, station waggon, “Kombi”), the first row passenger seat (aka copilot seat) can be slid forward significantly. This allows lot’s of space on the rear row of seats and sparked the idea for a removable operator desk installation.

You get an idea from the pictures below. The desk is a right angled wood construction which is attached the the copilot head-rest with threaded rods and wing-nuts for tightening.

Installation is pretty quick:

  • slide the copilot seat into front-most position
  • put the back rest into the most upright position
  • mount the “ham operator desk”
  • use copilot seat height adjust for best operator desk fit
  • put all needed equipment on the desk, and ready for first QSO!
